Statistics

Because of the random lottery process, charter schools in Boston serve a very similar population as that of Boston Public Schools.

Like all public schools in Massachusetts, charter schools are required to give their students the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) test.

A 2006 study by the Massachusetts Department of Education showed that, as a cohort, charter school students in Boston scored "significantly higher" than students in Boston Public Schools each year from 2002 to 2005 in both the English Language Arts and the Mathematics sections of the MCAS. This holds when comparing among African American, Hispanic, Low Income, and Special Education subgroups. You can read more from the Boston Globe here.
